Before we begin, here is a glossary of the different words and abbreviations you will find in this course that relate to Active Directory.

For your information, in computer diagrams, Active Directory is represented by the following pictogram:

A.D. : Abbreviation for Active Directory.

D.C. : English abbreviation for Domain Controller. See: Domain controller.

DCPROMO : Before Windows Server 2012, the dcpromo.exe utility was used to configure Active Directory services after their installation.

DNS The Domain Name System (DNS) is a server role that resolves a domain name to an IP address. It is essential for the proper functioning of Active Directory services.

Global catalog : “controller type” or option of a domain controller that contains information about all objects in the forest.

Domain controller : term used for a server that has the AD DS role installed and configured.

GC : English abbreviation for Global Catalogue: see Global Catalogue.

GPO : Abbreviation for Group Policy Object. See Group Policy.

Object : A record in the Active Directory LDAP database, which can be a user, group, computer, etc. These objects are also called Class and they are made up ofAttributes. (The concepts of class and attribute are developed in the next chapter)

OR : Abbreviation in English. of Organization Unit. See Organizational Unit.

Group Policy : An Active Directory object that allows you to apply configurations to computers and users that are members of the domain.

Organizational unit : Container that allows you to organize objects in the Active Directory.
